Location Permission - Street

Street Filming Permission Request Letter

This documentation shows evidence of a request letter to film on a public street. This is evidence that I have contacted the owner of that land that I want to film in and have requested permission to film. At this point I have not yet received permission to film in these locations but have requested it. Before a film producer gets permission to film in a location, they have to request permission. A film producer only requests permission if they know that is the location, they want to film in. The know this from sourcing locations and creating a location recce and risk assessment for potential filming locations. Most of the time, film producers request permission for multiple possible filming locations in case a location owner says no, or a certain location suddenly becomes unavailable whilst filming, leaving a film producer to possibly use a backup location, however, I have only requested permission for one possible location option because I know that is where I want to film. Evidence that a film producer is allowed to film in a location is needed because it is illegal to film without it and film makers can get arrested or have to face consequences if they get caught filming in a location without permission. Despite it being illegal to film without permission, some film makers do it anyway in hopes of not getting caught and sometimes it turns out successful for the film producer. However, the risk is quite high does not always pay off for some film makers. It is risk - free and better to gain a location permit or permission to film in a location. I have completed a location permission document as a letter because the street that I want to film in is a public street but owned by the government, I did not know the email or phone number of anyone working for the government and therefore I decided to write a letter. Most of the time, people who want to contact the government would write a letter. In this letter I also gave the government my email so that it would be easier for the government to contact me, if they wanted to do so. This documentation impacts my final production because the governments answer determines my location for my film and the overall look/ mise-en-scene of the scenes that need to be filmed on a street. My piece of documentation is professional and industry standard, it gives details about the film, what we would use the location for and who would be involved.

To whom it may concern,
I am currently a student and plan on producing a horror film but need a public street in Rotherham to film some scenes throughout. I hope to film on Woodland Drive. I am already a resident there and therefore already know that it would be a great location for my film.

I would use your land to film on the 18th March to the 19th March 2021. My cast and crew will consist of 5 people, and we will not cause any disruptions or damage to your forestMoreover, I have completed a high standard risk assessment to ensure that that there will be no issues or injuries whilst filming. I plan on placing filming equipment within your public area but however, I will remove them on the last day of filming. I would be grateful if you could let me know if it is possible to film at your site. I can be contacted via a letter or my email oegr14mo@dcsch.co.uk.
Thank you for considering my request

Yours Sincerely, Millie Oates.

Street Permission Correspondence Letter

This correspondence letter is evidence that I have permission to film in my chosen location - on a street. Most of the time, film producers gain permission for multiple possible filming locations in case a location owner says no, or a certain location suddenly becomes unavailable whilst filming, leaving a film producer to possibly use a backup location, however I only received permission to film in one possible street location, this is because I only wanted to film on this street. It is risk-free and better to gain a location permit or permission to film in a location. I have completed a location permission document as a letter because the street that I want to film in is a public street but owned by the government, I did not know the email or number of anyone working for the government and therefore I decided to write a letter. A letter is useful because it is physical evidence that proves you have permission to film in a certain location and therefore if anyone asks to see proof you can easily show this a letter. This documentation impacts my final production because it legally secures a location for me to film in. I now know that I can successfully film on my chosen street. I also now have a larger idea on how my film is going to look and can imagine the mise-en-scene and look of the scenes filmed on a street. My piece of documentation is professional but not industry standard, this is because a permission correspondence letter would be written by a regular person who most likely is not involved in the film industry and only really needs to give a yes or no answer.

Industry Standard Example
Permission letter to film
This industry example location permission letter is similar to mine in which it asks permission to film in a location, it gives details about why they want to use the locations and who will be using it. However, this example is more professional than mine. This is because it includes signatures and is more detailed than mine.
